CARE International, the lead agency for this joint ECB Project initiative, would like to collect feedback from agencies that are interested in testing the Shelter Training Module in order to capture lessons learned and further improve the materials.

If you would like to use the materials, please contact us Philip Barritt via email barritt(at)careinternational.org for further information or to share your suggestions.

Shelter Training Module

Shelter is really important for people who are coping with and recovering from a disaster. Agencies providing shelters in an emergency need to get it right. Get it wrong and this can create conflict or reinforce existing tensions. CARE International together with ECB Project agencies have developed training on managing shelter response programs based on sharing key concepts, best practice and experiences.

The Shelter Training Module is available for agencies to train participants working in the development and/or emergency sectors. It is particularly relevant to humanitarian managers likely to be leading shelter technical staff.

The India and Indonesia pilots

ECB successfully piloted the three-day training module in India and Indonesia, in March 2012, with attendees from 15 organizations. Over the course of the training, participants discussed different ways of running shelter programs, and shared key concepts and best practice.

Feedback from the Indonesia pilot

“I was amazed how much the course covered, not only a range of technical topics but it encouraged us to be thinking more broadly about shelter in general.” Dino Argianto, Indonesia Program Coordinator DM-OD, American Red Cross

“Working with the case studies was really useful; it opened up a wider breadth of shelter project possibilities.” Andreas Hapsoro, Disaster Response Manager, Habitat for Humanity Indonesia

“It quickly become apparent during the training that cross agency networking opportunities for mid-level practitioners in the shelter sector are rare outside disasters and this should be recognised as an important function of the ECB Project Shelter Training, a function that increases collaboration and strengthens the community of practitioners within a country… in the long run improving shelter delivery to disaster affected populations.” Dave Hodgkin, Training Co-Facilitator, Benchmark Consulting
