8 January 2013: “Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) - a fundamental element of building resistance” released by the VOICE network
A few months ago Voluntary Organizations in Cooperation in Emergencies (VOICE)* released a position paper entitled “Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) - a fundamental element of building resistance.” The paper highlights the importance of building resilience in the context of the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters, and the current financial climate, in which investment in long term DRR work makes economic sense. The paper builds on work by the EU over the last year to raise international commitment to DRR and supports some of the key principles highlighted in the new ECB guide Toward Resilience: A Guide to Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation.
17 December 2012: Consortium Self-Assessment Survey workshops held in the Horn of Africa, Indonesia and Bangladesh
The Consortium Self-Assessment Survey (CSAS) workshop is designed to discuss the process, methodology and approach used during the CSAS annual review process. The workshop is also used to review the content of the CSAS tool, examine the relevancy of the CSAS to field staff, and share the CSAS prototype self-assessment dashboard that is currently in development Read more
6 December 2012: New training course increases shelter knowledge and capacity of humanitarian staff
Shelter is critical in times of crisis. The loss of a home exposes vulnerable individuals and communities to ill health, poor security, indignity, poverty and exploitation. Secure shelter provides a base for the recovery and development of livelihoods, health and water and sanitation services, while poor shelter projects can easily create conflict or reinforce existing social or community-based tensions. 4 December 2012: Latest Accountability Standing Team deployments to Niger, Nepal and Indonesia
In 2011, six ECB Project agencies developed an Accountability and Impact Measurement Standing Team to improve accountability and impact measurement practices in the field, and share learning and expertise across multiple countries and agencies. The standing team program involves group training, sharing learning and short deployments to work on specific accountability challenges and gaps within the ECB Project consortia countries. Read more
14 November 2012: Participatory Disaster Risk Assessment (PDRA) global learning event in Indonesia
The ECB Project’s Participatory Disaster Risk Assessment (PDRA) and Planning Program is an initiative to develop innovative new approaches to Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) that involve humanitarian staff and community members working together to identify community needs, recognize threats faced, and prepare risk reduction measures. 13 November 2012: Milestone Review for ECB Consortia Field Facilitators
ECB Project Field Facilitators will get together November 21-22 2012, in Indonesia, for a milestone meeting to review Phase II of the ECB Project, and discuss interest and opportunity for Phase III, which may start in 2013. Read more
30 October 2012: The ECB Project’s National Staff Development Program, ‘ENHAnce,’ preparing for Simulations and Learning Events
The ENHAnce (Expanding National Humanitarian Ability) program aims to improve the speed and quality of emergency response through improved recruitment, retention, development and deployment of skilled and experienced emergency staff. Read more
16 October 2012: ECB National Staff Development program ENHAnce drawing to a close
Based on the Context Training Materials, which were created by the Consortium of British Humanitarian Agencies (CBHA), the ENHAnce program aims to develop the core humanitarian skills and leadership competencies of existing national staff and build a network of humanitarians who can work effectively together to improve the speed and quality of response in a disaster.
