ECHO supports the roll out of The Good Enough Guide

Published during Phase I of the ECB project, The Good Enough Guide was researched and written by a team of IWG agency experts who identified the need for a simple, pocket-sized guide to the fundamentals of impact measurement and accountability. The guide was made available in English and then translated into French, Spanish, Arabic, Hindi and Bahasa. It is a leading example of how the partnership work and expertise of 6 agencies can deliver a product that responds to the needs of not only their own stakeholders, but also numerous other agencies and organizations in the wider humanitarian community.

This team effort is set to continue in Phase II with the support of a grant from The European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO).

Oxfam GB and World Vision International are leading the new ECB project team that will design and develop clear and simple communications materials to disseminate the key accountability messages contained in the Good Enough Guide. Lucy Heaven, from Oxfam GB, highlights the need “…our research underscores the need for powerful interactive materials, using practical examples, that will help strengthen the messaging and application of the guide”. A multi-agency team is already working, together with field-based colleagues, to develop films, posters and plays that could be translated and used to communicate with both agency staff and beneficiaries. Once developed, these materials will be made available to all humanitarian organizations.

“We’re not developing new guidelines and practices; instead we’re taking the tools and messages that we developed in Phase I and identifying ways to support a broader understanding and implementation of the Good Enough Guide’s approach” emphasizes Julian Srodecki, AIM advisor and lead for this ECB project at World Vision International. The new communications material will be field tested and adapted in ECB consortia including Bangladesh and the Horn of Africa before being made available to numerous disaster-prone regions.

ECB Bangladesh Consortia Manager, Md. Harun or Rashid, explains “This new package of communications material, together with a new Bangla edition of the Good Enough Guide, will provide us with a powerful mix of accountability-focussed tools that we will test in the South and then use to reach our most disaster prone regions across Bangladesh.”

The success of the project will be measured through surveying key changes in knowledge, attitude and practice in accountability to beneficiaries. This all-important combination of multi-agency AIM expertise and vital feedback from ECB Consortia will ensure that the right supporting materials are developed in response to the needs of accountability practitioners and beneficiaries around the world.
